Who are we?
We are a local Medford group, who believes that the potential for global climate change due to increasing greenhouse gas emissions cannot be ignored. The scientific community has reached consensus that human activities are starting to affect the Earth's climate and will increasingly do
so in the future. The consequences of global climate change for human societies and ecosystems world-wide could be very grave. Therefore,
we believe that the time to act is now.
What are our goals?
On October 9, 2001, Medford became the first city in Massachusetts to
adopt a Climate Action Plan. This plan outlines how Medford's municipal government proposes to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 20%
below 1998 levels by the year 2010.
Example actions include conversions
of traffic signals and street lights to more energy efficient systems, the purchase of alternative fuel vehicles for the City fleet, etc.
The Climate Action Plan also calls on the Medford community as a whole
to reduce its emissions by 10% by 2010. The mission of the Medford
Climate Action Network is to help achieve this goal by:
- increasing awareness of global climate change and what to do about it,
- increasing membership in Medford's Climate Action Network,
- promoting actions and behaviors that lower greenhouse gas emissions,
- developing support for Medford's Climate Action Plan
- working with other groups, such as the Massachusetts Climate Action Network, to influence state and national policies.
